It’s when you have a party with a lot of friends, usually cheering the same team in the parking lot of the stadium, before a football game. Tailgating comes from the fact that people often set up around their cars and trucks, sometimes cooking or sitting on the tailgates.
Making a day long event out of a game. It doesn’t matter if the team will win or lose – just sit around drink beer, eat food and play games.
The actual event came from “American Tailgater Association, the practice developed from the first intercollegiate football game, which was between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869. Spectators gathered to grill sausages at the “tail end” of a horse, giving rise to the name.”
